The 10 Biggest Mistakes When Caring for Extensions

Hair extensions and hair thickening are perfect for enhancing your beauty. They are a great way to add volume and length to your hair. But not everyone knows how to handle extensions properly. How can you make sure your human hair extensions last as long as possible? What should you never do with hair extensions? We have listed ten common mistakes that customers make after getting hair extensions for the first time:

1. Washing your hair upside down

Washing your hair upside down can cause all sorts of problems. Changing the position of the hair extensions can cause your hair to mat badly. It is best to wash your extensions in the shower, because the stream of water has a combing effect and detangles the hair at the same time.

2. Using conventional care products

Conventional care products are not suitable for extensions. Instead, use care products developed especially for extensions and apply them to the hair, not the scalp.

3. Brushing extensions while wet

This tip also applies to your own hair. When wet, hair is more prone to breakage. The pulling of the brush can damage your hair and your extensions.

Always brush your hair before washing and let it dry afterward before gently detangling it.

4. More hair – more work

It is a big mistake to underestimate the extra effort extensions require. If you are one of those people who would rather spend just 5 minutes in the bathroom in the morning, extensions are not a good investment. You need to plan at least 20 minutes each morning for daily care.

5. Rubbing your hair dry

Friction can damage hair. So use a soft towel or a T-shirt and gently squeeze your hair to absorb the moisture. Then blow-dry with the dryer on its lowest setting, first the attachment points and then the rest of your hair. The extensions don't need to be completely dry, but they should be at least partly dry before you brush them. Always use heat protection before blow-drying and be sure to use a special brush for your extensions.

6. Not finding out enough about the different types of extensions

When you decide on hair extensions, keep in mind that each type has its own characteristics and qualities. If you have very fine hair, for example, clip-in extensions are the wrong investment, because the clips are too heavy and visible. The result will not look natural. So find out more on our website first, then choose the type of extensions that suits you best!

7. Not having your extensions moved up in time

Depending on how fast your own hair grows, you need to have your extensions moved up every 3 to 6 months. This is not only about looks but also about the health of your hair. If the distance to the scalp becomes too large, it leads to matting above the attachment points. So always make sure to have your hair extensions removed in time, or remove them yourself, and then reapply them a little higher up.

8. Too little or too much distance from the scalp

This point is directly related to the previous one. The right distance from the scalp is about 5 mm. This way, your bonding extensions, tape-in extensions or microring extensions strands don't grow out too quickly, and your own hair is protected from matting at the same time. In addition, the attachment points can feel uncomfortable if they are placed too close to the scalp.

9. The extensions were applied incorrectly

It can happen even to professional hairstylists that individual strands or wefts are applied at an angle or that the attachment points don't sit correctly. This can cause the extensions to slip or even fall out. So, especially if you apply your hair extensions yourself, make sure they are straight and secure.

10. Swimming or going to the sauna with extensions

In summer, there is nothing better than cooling off in the pool. For your dream mane, however, this can be risky. The chlorine or salt in the water can damage the structure of your hair. It is best to put your hair up before you take a refreshing dip.

Saunas are also harmful to extensions. Make sure to protect your extensions with care products, or better still, avoid the sauna altogether. If you are a passionate sauna-goer, you should opt for temporary hair extensions that you can take out beforehand.

So there are a few things to keep in mind when you wear extensions. But if you use the right care products, know the tips and tricks for washing extensions and make sure not to expose your hair to too many environmental stresses, not much can go wrong, and you can enjoy your beautiful long hair!
