CLIP-IN EXTENSIONS

Everything You Need to Know About Clip-in Extensions!

What Are Clip-in Hair Extensions?

Clip-in extensions are human hair extensions that are attached to your own hair with metal clips. Their big advantage is how easy they are to use. The hair clips are taken out and stored after each wear, so they can be used again and again. You can style Rubin human hair clip-in extensions before putting them in, which saves you time in the morning. For example, if you have an early appointment, simply curl your clip-ins the evening before – in the morning, all you have to do is put them in! Overnight, it is best to store them in the practical Extensions Bag so they do not tangle.

Where Does the Name Clip-in Extensions Come From?

The name describes exactly how they work: the attachments look like small hair clips. They close with a characteristic “click”, and your hair lengthening or hair thickening is done!

Good to know: the clips are always matched to the hair color, so they are even less noticeable in your own hair. Most customers want their hair extensions to look as natural as possible, so the attachment points should never show through.

When attaching them, always make sure you have enough hair on top to hide the clips.

The History of Clip-in Extensions

Hair extensions have been around for thousands of years. Hard to believe, but even the ancient Egyptians lengthened their hair. Monarchs such as the Sun King, Louis XIV, were known for their hair loss and the lavish wigs meant to hide it. Back then, mostly animal hair was used for hair extensions, although human hair was occasionally used as well. The adhesives were made from bee resin or wax – so you can imagine that removing them must have been difficult and rather unpleasant.

Clip-in hair extensions have not been around as long. They came onto the market in the 20th century. At first, film actors mostly wore permanent extensions. Clip-ins were invented because of growing demand from stars for temporary hair extensions. It is not really known exactly who invented them or when, but they were probably first used in the 1960s.

What Are the Advantages of Human Hair Clip-in Extensions?

Some people have a very sensitive scalp. Permanent extensions such as tape-in extensions, microring extensions or keratin bond extensions can cause a slight, usually barely noticeable pulling sensation, which some people still find bothersome. If you only want to lengthen or thicken your hair for a short time without feeling the pressure of the attachments overnight, clip-ins are for you!

Clip-in hair extensions are also super quick to put in and take out. This lets you try out as many different colors and lengths as you like and look different every day.

Who Are Clip-ins Suitable For?

Human hair clip-in extensions are best suited to people who value flexibility and like to change their look often. Long hair is your dream, but sometimes you would rather have shorter hair or add a pop of color? With clip-ins, that is no problem at all, and you can change your hairstyle every day with little effort.

Another advantage of human hair clip-in extensions is that you can use heat on them, giving your own hair a break. Style your clip-in hairpieces before putting them in – you not only save time, you also avoid damaging your own hair.

Clip-in hair extensions have a longer lifespan than all other types of extensions. Compared with tape-ins or bond extensions, they are subject to less wear, because they are not worn every day and are removed from your hair in the evening. They also do not need to be washed as often. We recommend washing our human hair clip-in extensions only when they have been exposed to smoke or other environmental influences or no longer smell fresh.

Who Are Clip-in Extensions Not Suitable For?

There are very few people for whom clip-in extensions are not suitable. However, if your hair is naturally very thin, the clips need a larger surface to hold securely. A good trick here is backcombing:

  1. Backcomb the roots where you want to attach the clip-in hairpiece.
  2. Use hairspray to give that section of hair more grip.
  3. Put in the clip-ins.

Also, always make sure to leave enough hair above the clips to hide them well. This is an additional challenge with very thin hair, because the extension attachments show through more often.

What Are Clip-in Extensions Especially Good For?

Would you like long hair for special occasions but do not care much about a flowing mane in everyday life? Then clip-in extensions are the ideal choice for you!

At your own wedding, and at other special occasions, you want to look stunning. Long, thick hair is perfect for that and radiates natural elegance. You can also style clip-ins however you like without worrying about damaging your hair.

How Long Do Clip-in Extensions Last?

If you wear your clip-in extensions every day, they last between six months and a year. Their lifespan generally depends a lot on how often you wear them and how well you care for them. On days when you are “just” at home, give your clip-ins a break and pamper them with a care routine.

Most people who buy clip-ins wear their extensions only for special occasions that come up no more than three or four times a year, which extends their lifespan many times over.

Synthetic or Human Hair – Is High Quality Worth It?

Do you want your extensions to look natural? Do you also want them to last as long as possible so you can enjoy your new hair for a long time? Then good quality is definitely worth it. Extensions made of synthetic hair can neither be styled properly nor colored. Human hair extensions have the advantage that you can treat them just like your own hair. That is why it always pays to invest in high-quality human hair products.

The care products for your clip-ins should be high-quality too, so you can clean them gently when they get dirty from environmental influences or no longer smell fresh.

How Do I Care for Clip-in Extensions?

The same care tips apply to clip-in extensions as to all other types of extensions. Clean them only with special care products, because some ingredients in regular drugstore products can damage extensions. Clip-ins normally do not need to be shampooed. It is enough to soak them in a mixture of extensions conditioner and lukewarm water for 10 to 15 minutes.

If the hair is really very dirty, you can clean it with an extensions shampoo. Simply detangle the strands with a wide-tooth comb before washing, wet them and then gently massage in the shampoo. Rinse out the shampoo as usual.

After washing, use the conditioner as well as a care balm or care spray.

As a rule of thumb, the hair usually only needs to be cleaned after three to four wears. But of course, how intensively you care for your clip-ins should depend mainly on your own needs.
